HAPPY INTERNATIONAL CHARDONNAY DAY! I’m sorry for those of you whose day went past without Chardonnay… But I won’t get into a political rant!
Did you know that Chardonnay is the most widely planted white grape variety? And is the undisputed Queen of white varietals.
I rummaged what is left in our ‘cellar’ and found some old beauties and coravined them to see how they were doing.
EIKENDAL 2015 * A nose of enticing lightly infused nutmeg cookie dough, makes you dive in for a further investigation of this Stellenbosch classic. It still has a vibrant acidity with a huge depth of character. Jasmine, fresh vanilla pod, and the dusty marshmallow powder. A wonderful length of fresh citrus rind is left on on the palate. This wine still has so much developing potential. Big and vibrant!
JOURNEYS END DESTINATION 2014 * The premium Chardonnay of the 3 they produce and the more voluptuous. Fresh leather, lime & bay leaf are evident on nose. A juicy citrus palate follows with mouthwatering acidity. Baking spices and freshly baked bread. A bold depth of burnt sage butter.
ATARAXIA 2009 – Initial whiff takes me back to a cottage in the depth of the Irish countryside – toasted homemade brown bread with farm butter and grannys freshly made orange marmalade. Sandal wood develops, with a nuttiness evident. Dancing acidity tells a tale that she isn’t done yet. It’s alluring and complex. Craves for more of your attention.
South African Chardonnays can stand the test of time if you have the will power, they will continue to please for a good decade if not more. All three showing accomplished wine making and wonderful terroir. This is a day I celebrate daily. I can donate my blood, but only to those who have the same love for this noble grape!
