WELL RECOMMENDED! This weekend we ventured out to Elgin. We stayed at Paul Wallace Wines. They have three charming cottages with beautiful views over the valley, all well equipped with everything you need for a perfect weekend away.
Paul Wallace was the most wonderful host, (unfortunately we didn’t see his wife Nicky as she was in isolation). The wines were incredibly enjoyable too…
My thoughts & highlights ~
• REFLECTION CHARDONNAY 2020. The name “Reflection” is derived from the magnificent early morning and evening reflection of the Chardonnay vineyard in the dam. The wine shows a beautiful purity of fruit, a lovely clean wine with a comforting softness, and just the right amount of oak. 4.5* Platters. R240. It’s that Goldilocks Chardonnay that makes me smile.
• BRAVEHEART PINOT NOIR 2019. The name is a tribute to William Wallace, a man of great principle and heart, who Paul would like to believe is one of his ancestors! It is also a play on the Pinot Noir cultivar’s nickname – the Heart Break grape. Whole bunch fermentation and 20% new oak. It’s a bright, vibrant and cheerful Pinot Noir dominated by red fruit but in by no means simple. It’s lip smackingly delicious! R260.
• OFF THE RECORD Chenin Blanc 2021. This is made by the next generation. A collaboration between Nicky & Paul’s sons; Mark & Bobby. When you taste this you wonder why there aren’t more Chenins made in this cool climate region. It’s a complex and intriguing wine, with beautiful floral aromas, white oeach and citrus. The palate is generous with a luminous acidity and a mineral core. It’s delicious, and perfect for any occasion. R220
• PAUL WALLACE BLACK DOG MALBEC 2018. Quite possibly SA’s best Malbec and certainly my favourite. It’s light in alcohol (13%) but with a mighty depth of flavour. Supple tannins, luscious blueberries & bramble berries, soft and delectable. Named after the other wonderful hosts on the farm, their beautiful and attention loving black lab.
I highly recommend you visit when next in the valley to stay or just to taste the wine, they also offer a wonderful wine and chocolate pairing which I’d love to check out next time.
This is a special gem, the kind of winery where the owner will join your table and have a glass of wine with you while sharing countless stories. Having wonderful tastings like this makes lasting memories.
