I just received this mailer from Steenberg, and wanted to share it for you, for those who aren’t on their mailing list. As the wine industry is on their knees at the moment, they are doing what they can to survive, and we need to do what we can to support them in their endeavours so we can enjoy their exquisite wines and venues once this is all over.
Why the Alcohol Ban is More Devastating Than You Might Think
From Steenberg’s point of view
It’s not just about the sale of that bottle of wine in that moment. It’s about the industries which wine supports, it is about the people which wine supports. It is about the far-reaching and prolonged repercussions this ban will have.
When our restaurants, hotel & spa and tasting room were allowed to open after lockdown; we implemented the strictest Covid-19 protocols and we have unwaveringly stuck to these protocols ever since. We are happy to say that we were busy and on some days, almost fully booked (by social distancing standards) and were inspired by the support of our guests and customers. We were happy to see smiling faces again, albeit through a mask. But everything was far from normal. We knew at this point recovery would be a long and arduous road, but we had faith we could keep our business running. But then the reinstatement of the alcohol ban was announced. Overnight we received cancellations of most of our restaurant and hotel bookings, with our tasting room and wine sales shut.
Currently our restaurants are welcoming only 35% of the number of guests compared to before the alcohol ban, and that is without the revenue afforded to us by alcohol sales. We stay open to bring in any revenue we can, to keep paying our people as far as we can.
Harvest is upon us with grapes being picked and pressed in the cellar. Wine is first and foremost an agricultural product. The average capacity of wine cellars across the country is at 65% with a new crop coming in. No wine sales means no storage space which means a lost crop. The knock on effect is never-ending.
You can play your part by offering your support. Whether that be in the form of purchasing wine online for delivery after the ban, booking a meal at our restaurants, booking a room at our hotel or a treatment at our spa.
We might not be able to offer you wine right now, but we can assure you that our facilities have some of, if not THE best Covid-19 protocols in Cape Town. You will not feel safer anywhere else.
Regardless of the time we find ourselves in, we are keeping a positive outlook. You will always find a pair of smiling eyes greeting you when you visit us, with our wonderful people always displaying an upbeat attitude. Our passion is innate within us. We will persevere and keep bringing you what you have come to know and love, through our courage and determination.
We hope to see you soon.
