I am honoured to live in one of the world’s best foodie cities; Cape Town. The Mother City has an ever changing vibrant restaurant scene. Luke Dale Roberts is at the helm of this movement with some of the city’s best restaurants; The Test Kitchen, Pot Luck Club, The Shortmarket Club & Salsify & now The Commissary. In all of the above you can expect an array of deliciousness with stunning interiors & impeccable service. & The Commissary meets these high standards but is served with a twist. The graffitied walls as you walk up into the restaurant let’s you know you’re in for one hell of an experience.
Luke Dale Roberts is one of the founders, but he has taken a step back & let two of his prodigies Wesley Randles & Simon Widdison shine & take centre stage in this new cutting edge eatery. “Over the years I’ve realised that one of the things that really motivates me is helping team members reach their potential & find their own way – getting to play a part in that journey is so exciting” says Luke.
“Wesley came to me with the idea a while ago and I loved it – it’s a back-to-basics approach to food which really resonates with me & everything I love about food & I couldn’t think of anyone more driven & committed than Wesley to make it work”, says Luke of his 29-year-old mentee.
The dishes are so full of flavour, served on tin & plastic plates, nothing pretentious, just unapologetically delicious food. It’s real food, genuine & exquisite. Nothing about the menu is subtle — “it’s all fucking in your face,” smiles Randle
What I love so much about this restaurant (well what’s not to like) you can pop in for a dish or two or you can stay & try everything on the menu (I’d recommend the latter). Wash it down with a wonderfully well crafted & well priced wine list, most of which is available by the glass & you’re in for an awesome evening & it’s totally affordable. A Luke Dale Roberts restaurant a local can afford to be a regular at; lekker!
The wine list is small but perfect. However, I tend to order the same wine each time; Jessica Saurwein’s Chi Riesling. It makes the perfect pairing with most of the dishes & helps tame down some of the punch of flavour the food delivers. It is off dry but remains fresh & has vibrant zesty acidity.
